Today's post: A few words about Mr. Bear.
This is Mr. Bear.
Mr. Bear is my SO's teddy bear. We would play around with some of the stuffed animals we collect, especially Mr. Bear; at first he sounded a lot like the Cheat from Homestar Runner, and didn't actually say words. We'd just make him dance around and (pretend to) eat lots of tasty food and be cute.
The first time we played with Mr. Bear having a voice was several years ago, when I came home after hitting my head hard enough at work to leave me with a huge lump on my forehead. They sent me home, and I seem to recall my SO poking at me a lot to keep me awake. When I came home, after I made it to the couch, he came up to me with Mr. Bear in hand and asked (in the squeaky voice) "Are you okay?"
It became a thing between us after that. We built up a personality around him, although not a very complicated one. (He loved food, he was always positive, he got angry when people treated other people badly, stuff like that. Also, he had eye lasers.) Occasionally I would use him as a way to say things that I was nervous about saying; my SO isn't the sort to get mad about criticism, but I'd had bad past experiences, and it took me a lot of time to start to get over that. Other times I'd use Mr. Bear to encourage myself, because I have a hard time with negative self-talk and it's somehow easier to believe good things when they come from a cute little bear.
Sometimes I search the internet for pictures of bears doing cute things to share with people, under the tag Things Mr. Bear Does. It amuses me, if nothing else. Also I sketch a bunch of bears in weird color schemes and post those, too.
Mr. Bear became a sort of meme in our house, and a character; I'm probably going to try to do something with the character, like the video game I mentioned in a previous post. He's just a positive sort of character, and I think I could use more of that.
