Note to self: Don't try to do more than one time-consuming project in December anymore. You KNOW this.

The rest of Meta Month has been delayed until further notice. I still want to write the posts, but, y'know. Retail at the holidays, among other things. -_-'

Also, for those of you who still use Livejournal, apparently some users have had their Automatic Payment option switched on without their permission. So if you use the site and you've had your account paid recently, or ever, check your settings. I'd hate to see anyone end up overdrawn because of something like this.

Also, apparently LJ's failing again (completely unrelated to the above.) Look here if you really want details.

In particular, people are complaining because someone translated and shared a Twitter conversation between some of the owners of LJ that basically are very dismissive of the people who've complained about the changes. People are very angry. (It's in the link I posted if you want to see exactly what they said.)

And yes, I get the anger. Over the changes, the lack of reaction to the changes, and the bad customer relations (because, y'know, basically belittling your customers in a public place? Not cool, people, not cool. I work in customer service, and that sort of thing would get me in trouble in a hurry. It's rude and unprofessional and should basically never, ever be done.)

At the same time. Do (general) you realize WHY they're being so flippant about this? It's because they're expecting the users who are complaining to complain for a while, then go right back to using their service, and very often throw money at them for the privilege! Of course they think that people are going to continue to do what they've done for years!

And once again, I am not saying that any of that bullshit is okay and that the people involved should get a free pass. Only that, hey, maybe this is a sign that the way people have been approaching their dissatisfaction with LJ isn't working. Maybe this is a sign that they need to choose another way, like not continuing to support the site that they feel the need to continually complain about.

I hadn't been using LJ for a long time, but I finally deleted my LJ account a couple of months ago (the bit where people were seeing other people's logged-in content a while back was the last straw for me.) My only real connection to LJ is an RSS feed that I didn't create in the first place. I wouldn't go back there at all, if not for the fact that unfortunately there are certain communities that aren't mirrored on DW that I'm still interested in looking at, but even those I don't really look at anymore.

And, y'know, I don't miss the service itself. Do I miss some of the people there? Sure. And yes, I do miss the fact that a lot of the things I'm interested in have large (or at least existing) fanbases on LJ and almost nothing on DW. But as far as the actual service, as far as I'm concerned this site has it beat in every way. That said, not everyone likes DW and that's okay. There are other options. Other social networks. Forums and mailing lists (remember those?) Good old-fashioned e-mail between you and the people you want to stay in touch with.

My point is, it is more than possible to delete LJ and not suffer terribly for it. And really, if you want to show someone that you are not satisfied with their service, you don't just keep using it. That just leads to exactly the sort of complacency we see in those tweets. If you want to show someone that you are dissatisfied with their services, you stop supporting those services. When you post angry commentary and the like on LJ, you are, by one means or another, supporting the very services that are making you angry.
