It definitely helps if you're able to cook for yourself. I know I do better when I bring my own lunch instead of eating out (and I even eat out comparatively healthily!)
Exercise is amazing. Even if it doesn't help you lose weight, it does a lot of other great stuff like improve your blood pressure and help you sleep better (which also does lots of great stuff). I get horribly fidgy and don't rest well if I can't do stuff. I can't wait for spring to really get here so I can go on long walks.
