Fang had the weird white crest superimposed over the black brand, I think. Everyone else got the same crest just before the last big battle with Orphan. It seemed to have something to do with their defiance, but it was never really explained. After Cocoon was saved, though, everyone lost their brands outright - there was nothing there at all. Makes me wonder to what extent their powers and what they learned had lingered.
