Also, regarding the publishing industry... yes, that's part of the reason I'm so intimidated. I've heard similar stories about it, in terms that make "beat herself bloody" look like an overkind description. I too know a number of very talented people who've tried and tried and tried to get their foot in the door only to have it rigged with explosives. Or something.
I don't want to give up on something just because "it's too hard," but I don't know the right balance here - just how long do you spend at what feels like trying to knock a brick wall down with your head before you're justified in saying, "Okay, this isn't working" and moving on?
