Well,
mako_lies asked me about the process I use when I'm drawing.
...I'm not so sure I have a process, to be honest. I just draw things. It's kind of like asking about my style and me wondering how much longer I have to go before I can call my choices stylistic instead of just attributing them to lack of skill.
I suppose I have a few things to say about it, though.
I definitely believe in reference pictures even if you aren't drawing from real life (or at least photos of real life.) I have no idea how the whole "References are cheating" mindset came about, when so many beautiful 2D animations were literally drawn over real life footage. That said, I know that copying too closely isn't really teaching anyone anything. I try to come up with my own poses when I can. Thing is, I haven't practiced enough yet to really get anatomy down; I need to practice more with sites like Quickposes, or maybe even find a figure drawing workshop locally that won't cost too much.
Usually I stick with digital art. It's easier to erase stuff than to cover mistakes. I've done a couple of colored pencil sketches lately, mostly because I got the colored pencils for math class on the teacher's suggestion and decided I'd play with them a little. (Verdict: I like them and want to get better-quality stuff at some point if I can ever afford it.)
I suppose I've gotten a little better over the past year? Since that's when I seriously started trying to draw more, anyway. I do think I've gotten better with not using all of the colors. I don't know, honestly; it's hard to judge.
As for where I get my ideas, I sometimes work from prompts, but usually I just have a ridiculous image that I want to draw. Sometimes it's difficult to make it look right, but I've gotten better about it lately. The reason I started drawing more fanart despite my lack of skill was because nobody was drawing the varying things I wanted to see more of, and I can't really afford commissions. So I just started drawing it myself.
