So I want to do the FF meme that everyone else is doing, but then remembered I was doing another meme and never finished it. Then I thought, why not do both at the same time?
(The "meme" tag on this entry will take you to the rest of the VG meme, considering that I haven't touched it in months.)

Day 8 - Best soundtrack.
If you made me choose? Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth. There are some gorgeous pieces in that game - some of which are, typically enough, only ever used in one dungeon that a lot of people will never see. (Eternal Hydrogen Anxieties, I'm looking in your direction.) It's not as generic as so many other games' music, in my opinion. There's a kind of quirky grandeur about it that I really enjoy.
Runner-up choice: The first four Quest for Glory games.
Day 9 - Saddest game scene.
Well... hmm. Again, there are a lot of sad moments that stood out. And it's been so long since I've played some of them that it's hard to remember. But there's one that comes to mind that really made me sniffle (you'd think I'd cry more at games, but for some reason they're the only thing that don't make me cry.)
Dragon Quest VIII - the scene after the battle in Neos, after Marcello gives Angelo his ring and walks away. Hell, that entire backstory is a tearjerker, but that scene really brings it to a head. Angelo has finally just admitted that all he ever wanted was his half-brother's kindness, that he's been holding on to what is basically a horrible relationship because he was kind to him once, before he knew they were half-brothers. And what does Marcello do? Reject him so completely and so utterly that he even gives up the thing that was once the most important to him in order to walk away. The look on the kid's face was so very sad.
Day 10 - Best gameplay
Um, I play RPGs, mostly. What is this gameplay of which you speak? (Okay, that sounds terrible. But honestly, I grew up on turn-based RPGs that mostly involved choosing things from menus.) Anyway, though, out of my early days, I think that Secret of Mana really stood out - an Adventure game (or what Nintendo called one, anyway) with a menu system that I preferred to, well, just about anything else I'd played at the time. There have been others I've liked since then, but that one stands out.

FF Meme:
Day 01 - Your favorite Final Fantasy game.
Tough call. Seriously, tough call.
I think that the first FF game that grabbed my heart, though, was FFVI. I really loved that game - I didn't even own it, and yet I managed to play it over and over and over again, renting it over and over. Even with the translation woes, it was one of the games that defined the entire genre for me. The characters were utterly charming, and I could really relate to them, even through the heavily censored and sometimes erroneous translation - I could feel their tragedies, which they certainly had, and it made me so happy when they finally triumphed.
The setting seems cliched now, but it was still fun, back then - I think I have a weakness for steampunk, even though at the time I had no idea what steampunk even was. And I really liked the freedom that the game gave you to explore, especially after the end. Yes, there were places you couldn't go, but most of the world was open to you. (Can you tell I tend to prefer sandbox games to non-sandbox games? Although they have their weaknesses, I like the ability to move freely throughout the world.) And the music was wonderful - and I'm not just talking about one or two scenes.
So, in conclusion - because I'm running out of ways to flail - I enjoyed just about everything about FFVI and can't wait for the DS version to come out, so I can finally own it. (I never got ahold of the GBA version, and I don't own the PSX or SNES ones for some reason.)
Runner-up: FFX. Playing that game felt much like playing FFVI for the first time. But it loses, because it was much more linear for much longer, and I do like the freedom to run around a bit.
Day 02 – Your least favourite Final Fantasy game.
Not factoring in FFII, FFIII, FFX-2, FFXI and FFXII due to lack of knowledge about them. No, I still haven't played FFXII. If I ever have time to play another massively long RPG again and the mental energy to stick to it, I'm sure that I will (see also: my abortive attempts to play Dragon Age: Origins.)
If I had to choose one - and keep in mind, "Least Favorite" does NOT mean "I hate this game forever," which is NOT the case here at ALL - I would have to go with FFXIII. My apologies to the people I know who are fans of the game, although I don't know how often any of them read DW - I did actually enjoy it, but out of the rest of the series, I would rank it at the bottom.
This might be as shallow as people who complain about graphics - which were quite good - but the main reason it got on my nerves was the utterly forgettable music. The soundtracks of the FF series have been a big deal for me ever since playing FFIV and hearing its wonderful score; none of the other FF games have disappointed me since, until this one. I can think of at least one memorable song from any one of the other games, even the very first. I can't think of a single memorable musical moment from FFXIII; its music was so generic, so bland. Does that make me as terrible as the people who won't touch the sprite-based games? Maybe. Does it matter, to me? Yes, I have to admit it does. (The voice-acting, on the other hand, was pretty darned good for a video game, and I have to give them props for that. Only one of the voices out of all of them consistently annoyed me, and that's one hell of an improvement over most voice-acted games.)
But it wasn't just the music. It took me until chapter seven or eight out of thirteen (or was it fourteen?) to even begin to warm up to the characters. For the most part, they were either uninteresting or downright annoying until about that point. I almost gave up on that game because I couldn't relate to anyone, except maybe one guy (Sazh, for the record,) and that wasn't enough to keep me interested. But my roommate, who actually owned the game I played, swore that there was a lot of character development and that everyone got more interesting, so I kept at it. In the end I'm glad I did - he turned out to be right - but still, taking half the game or more to actually grab my interest is not what I'd hoped for from a game in the FF series.
To gloss over the rest: The plot was way too linear for my tastes - seriously, and literally, linear. I didn't really start enjoying it in that respect until Chapter 11, when we got to Gran Pulse and the game started feeling less constrictive and more open. And I'm STILL not entirely clear on how the heroes were able to save the world by doing exactly what the villain expected them to do to destroy it. And the gameplay... well, on the one hand I kind of liked the Paradigm system. On the other hand, I do wish that hadn't been my only way of interacting with two out of three members of my party.
So, tl;dr - No, I don't hate FFXIII. I actually enjoyed it. But it just wasn't to all of my tastes, and so it occupies this question's slot, because one of the games has to.
Runner up: FFV, although that could just be because of the HORRIBLE PSX translation. -_-'
