[Still poking at this. If the RSS feed picks it up again... well, my apologies. I still don't understand those things.]
Usually, when someone asks me what sorts of things that I like (usually in the context of gift-giving) I sit there and sort of stare at them dumbly, or get flustered. This is not because I don't like things. I have no problem coming up with things given time. But when asked to produce a list of things on demand... well, I always draw a blank. I'm sure that there's some deep psychological reason for this, but by golly, I sure don't know it.
So I'm going to start keeping this running list (meaning I'll update it later.) That way, if someone asks me what I like, the worst case scenario will be me saying, "Hold on, I'll have to check. I'll get back to you about that." Which still sounds a bit odd, but it's an improvement.

In general, if I see something that I really, really like, instead of telling someone else about it, I tend to just get it myself (assuming that I can afford it.) Telling people that I'd like it as a gift feels manipulative. But then, telling people the date of my birth feels manipulative, and I've had more than one person tell me that I'm being oversensitive about that. I'm neurotic. I'm focusing more on the general stuff here, for that very reason.
I like clothes, but I tend to be picky about them. (I want to find a site that shows you lots and lots of pictures of clothes, so that users can rate how much they like them, then show other people the sorts of things that they like.) I'm never going to be rail-skinny or petite, though, even once I do lose lots and lots of weight. I might've worn a fourteen at my very thinnest; now I'm hovering around eighteen, and I need tall pants.
Sometimes I like board games. My roommate and I like to joke that we're going to buy lots and lots of board games, take them over to play with our friends one weekend when we're not RPing, set them all up together and come up with the rules for some kind of mega board game. Also, there's this one game called The Un-Game or some such - I've only ever seen it once, and never again. It's not really a game - more of a getting-to-know-people thing, and probably slightly less embarrassing than Truth or Dare - but I remember wishing ever since then that I'd picked it up.
Of course I'm interested in various RP systems and such. At the moment the only one I'm actively collecting is Shadowrun (4th ed.) although I am always up for learning others. (I am interested in the Mongoose publication of RuneQuest, mostly because of the games that I've been playing on the weekends, although I'd be interested in learning more about the earlier editions too; I've recently started trying to get into Exalted, and that looks pretty neat too. But I don't really have the time or the money to actively start collecting stuff for either system on my own at the moment. Why, why must my hobbies be so expensive?) Still, if one would want to get a sourcebook or whatever for me, it would be best to ask whether or not I have it. The answer will probably be no, at the moment....
Things I'd like to collect (not that I do much collecting yet, since I'm not sure where I'd put them:)
- Peacocks
- Puppies and kittens (especially both at the same time)
- Autumn flowers/foilage
Wall art related to those things would actually motivate me to decorate this room a bit more. Figurines... again, not sure where I'd put them yet, but I'm working on it. I need to get myself a bigger bookcase for my books and maybe use the little one for collectibles.
Speaking of books...
I like science fiction in general, although not so much the sort that focuses on grand epic futuristic battles (that's the kind of stuff that my dad reads; he has the biggest collection of David Drake novels that I've ever seen.) I especially like cyberpunk. I also like fantasy, but I don't care for a lot of the "typical" high fantasy that's published these days, for whatever reason; I tend to prefer urban fantasy and steampunk and other things that bend the format a bit.
I don't care for romance novels. I prefer psychological horror over any other sort of horror. I do tend to enjoy most historical fiction, but I can't think of any specific examples at the moment.
I haven't ready many graphic novels/comics yet. I'd like to read The Sandman series, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. And I've enjoyed what I've read by Alan Moore so far (which is all of two series - V for Vendetta and Watchmen.)
Authors whose works I particularly enjoy:
- Orson Scott Card
- Hugh Cook
- Neil Gaiman
- Guy Gavriel Kay
- S. P. Somtow (AKA Somtow Sucharitkul)
- Michael Swanwick
Authors whom I haven't read yet but would like to:
- H.P. Lovecraft, and the rest of his "circle."
As for music, my tastes in music are quite eclectic. It's really rather difficult to describe them, actually. I really like some artists and really hate some others within the same genre. Maybe I should start by listing artists that I already know that I like.
Artists that I like that I already own a lot of albums by (in other words, ask me first:)
Marillion
Happy Rhodes
VNV Nation
Sarah McLachlan
Barenaked Ladies
Artists that I like, but don't own many albums yet:
The Arrogant Worms
Depeche Mode
Fish*
Mono
Spirit of the West
Assemblage 23
Covenant
Sonata Artica
The Cruxshadows
(*Fish is the former frontman for Marillion. His solo albums are rather hard to find in this part of the world, but I've managed to find one so far.)
