whooooo wants DISTRESSING SNOWGRAVE FANFICTION

For the moment, this fic is exclusively available on my blog! I'm holding off on posting this to AO3 until tomorrow, because a) AO3 is currently sorting out some bookmarking issues, and b) I suspect Americans are going to be Fourth of Julying instead of reading fanfiction. Consider this a sneak preview!

i guess it's not really a liveblog since i'm writing this after the fact. whatever.

anyway, i've finished trails sc! took about 55 hours; thank god for the turbo button during some of the more tedious parts. a spoiler-free review is below, followed by indepth talk on chapter 8 and the final chapter.

Lives up to its predecessor in terms of scope of world and story, but gets bogged down by so-so villains in sharp contrast to the excellent character writing of the main party. The majority of the game retreads areas from FC, though the new dungeons are a joy to explore. Worth it for Estelle and her story, but some patience is required to tolerate the parts in between.

spoiler talk )

on to 3rd! i think i'll start it tonight, but i may not get further for a few days. also, now that i've finished SC, i'm looking forward to the FC remake even more... there were some callbacks in SC to stuff i'd really quite forgotten in FC, and it'd be nice to revisit. the new graphics are truly gorgeous; i saw a gifset today and just about cried seeing kloe in motion. THAT'S MY GIRL.

Challenge #1

Journaling Prompt: Light up your journal with activity this month. Talk about your goals for July or for the second half of 2025.

Creative Prompt: Shine a light on your own creativity. Create anything you want (an image, an icon, a story, a poem, or a craft) and share it with your community.. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Okay, well, I'm a fiber artist and I *love* being a fiber artist, but the craft is S-L-O-W. I could knock out another coaster or Other Brother Darryl in about an hour, but I've done +checks Ravelry+ at least 16 of the coasters and at least 8 of Other Brother Darryl. I really don't need to make any more. So instead of crafting something for this challenge, I will talk about my crafting plans for July and beyond.

...though if you want to see crafts I've made, you can check out my Crafting Update tab to see the pretties!

Gnomes

I have two nieces and four nephews, and I started a tradition of making them something for Christmas. It started with crocheted snowflakes, but last year I did small Christmas stockings. This year, I'm planning to make them gnomes, because gnomes are popular and fun. I've bought some yarn, and have a pattern picked out. I really should get started on these NOW, because last year I spent 100 hours crafting in December and it wore me out.

Incidentally, I participate in a crafting tournament on Ravelry called Nerdopolis. We get themes to craft to each round, that we can then tie to our team's Nerdery for a chance to win a prize. Well, one of the themes this month is Orchard Fruits and cherries, which are red, are orchard fruits. I was going to use red for the nieces' gnomes, so that will work nicely. Just need to sit down and do it.

iPad Mini holder

I crocheted some phone holders for me and mom a few months back, and my older sister was admiring mom's and wanted one for her iPad Mini, so I'm going to bang it out this month. It will fit nicely in the Nerdopolis challenge on Communication, as electronic devices such as iPads can be used to communicate with others.

Sophie Scarf

I started this last month for a Nerdopolis challenge but didn't finish it. I'd like to finish in the next two months. It can be submitted to Nerdopolis' Area 51 which is for completed UFOs (UnFinished Objects).

Secret Project

IT'S A SECRET! I hope to finish this month, but since I am designing it myself, there's a lot of ripping back and redoing to get it perfect. Wish me luck!

Motion Picture Mosaic Cardi

This was supposed to be my January project, but them I effed up my shoulder and couldn't really craft for a while. I did start this in January but HAHAHAHAHA NOPE DIDN'T FINISH. It's a huge project that is taking a lot of time. I mean, not only is it a large oversized long cardigan but it's also large in general as I am a large circumference type person. Getting awfully tired of rows of plain HDC... but I do desire this cardi very much, so I'll keep working on it.

The 42 WIPs (and counting)

...yeah, I have a LOT of projects I started in the past and didn't finish. I did just go through my Ravelry projects today and marked some as completed/frogged if I knew I'd never finish them, but there's still a lot that I'd really like to do someday. So how about making a goal to do, um, I think three is a good choice? by the end of the year? I mean, technically all the ones I listed above are WIPs, but let's face it, I have some that have been hibernating for ages (my oldest WIP is from 2008, yikes) so let's pick a few and get them done.
Theme Prompt: Summer Vacation
Title: Lost Summer
Fandom: Harry Potter
Rating/Warnings: Non-graphic mention of being burned alive (not for long). Nobody dies
Bonus: No
Characters: Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw
Word Count: 397
Summary: It was summer when she burned. And it was summer when she found hope again.

Summer is a time of life. And death. )

What We Weading Wednesday

white_aster: stacks of books (books)

Not...dead...yet.

Forget where I was, but here's what I've finished lately.

  • Cold Eternity by S.A. Barnes - I liked this!  I liked Dead Silence (great vibes) and HaTEd Ghost Station (because so much of it didn't make sense to me, plotwise).  I felt this was also in the "fun creepy vibes" category.  The resolution was kind of simple, but hey, solid space horror.
  • Into the Broken Lands by Tanya Huff - I...am glad I read this.  Unsure if I "liked" it, but it was kind of a strange book.  Imagine...Murderbot in a fantasy setting, with mages who broke part of the world and left it a reality-challenged wasteland, but not before they left behind a lot of very powerful mage-engineered devices, including some humanoid engineered "weapons".  That was the part I liked, because it did have some interesting (though kind of overwrought) things to say about defining personhood, and the "weapon" got much more POV than it usually does (Murderbot notwithstanding).  There was also one of the most delicately done and interesting corruption arcs I've ever seen done, and that got it up out of 2-star territory for me, but overall it sat around 3 or 3.5.  I felt it touched on things I liked but consistently didn't quite hit the beats square enough to get to 4 stars.  It wasn't helped by having a very, very annoying set of characters that I hated having to see so much of.
  • The Teller of Small Fortunes by Julie Leong.  I liked this a lot.  Cozy, but not too cozy in my view:  there was tension and problems and emotions and yes, everything worked out, but that's why I'm over reading cozy anyway, so I felt that was fine.
  • The Wonder Engine by T. Kingfisher.  Solid ending to this duology, though it felt very slow for most of it.  The ending was a banger, though, and raised it back up into solid 3.5 star territory for me.

Currently I'm reading Of Monsters and Mainframes by Barbara Truelove, and after a wobble at the start where I was kind of unsure if I was going to like the main AI character, it GRABBED me and I've loved it ever since.
