Gaming - ME2
Normally don't post these here, but at least one person who reads this journal and not my IJ is interested in this game, so yeah.
I've been playing a friend's copy of Mass Effect 2. It's a good game. I just haven't really been in the mood to comment on it. Also, I haven't played the first one yet, so I had to start with the "default" events that the game gives you if you didn't import a save. Not really what I would've preferred, since that sort of continuity is definitely relevant to my interests, but once I get my hands on a copy of ME1 I'll probably play it and import a save. Or two.
Anyway. I'm still terrible at shooters. That much is clear. I'm getting a little better, but I still end up lagging way behind my teammates as far as dropping the bad guys goes. (It doesn't help that I usually end up taking in guys who have sniper rifles, when until very recently almost all of my weapons focused on being good at close combat. I guess that's kind of the point of playing a Vanguard, considering that my signature special attack is a biotic charge that does good damage, but basically shoots me right into harm's way with no cover if I'm not careful with it. I usually just use Shockwave instead. Much less risky.)
I'm quite enjoying the plot and the attention to detail, even small ones that are probably never, ever going to come into play again. Then again, you can't really tell which ones are never going to come into play and which ones are going to be critically important in the next game, and that's the beauty of it. All of the characters are at least interesting, even the ones that I can't quite bring myself to fully like (i.e. Miranda and Zaeed.) Most of them are quite likable, even the random NPCs on the Normandy who let me overhear their conversations. (The two human engineers are my favorites, but then, I think they're a lot of peoples' favorites.)
Anyway, currently at a point when my fun occupation of running around the galaxy and helping people has been hijacked by a mission to go to a Collector ship and download stuff, only it's probably a trap and I'm very likely just about to be ambushed by a whole bunch of really nasty aliens. (I'm mostly choosing the Paragon choices, because I just don't like the Renegade choices for the most part. So I'm pretty damned charming. And, yes, helping people more often than not.) Quit before starting the main download, so I'm hoping that I'll be able to finish it quickly tonight so that I can get back to other things, like recruiting the woman in my last dossier.
Also, since I did say I'd comment on "the other canon xeno" as
cypher puts it... haven't actually started the romance yet; I haven't unlocked Thane's loyalty mission, which I'm supposing will be more of his own personal Redemption Quest. I'm thinking I'll like this subplot, though, because I've always been a sucker for stories about redemption, if they're done right. And about people who've lost their hope for the future finding it again. And he's an interesting character, which always helps, one of those assassins that you would NOT know was even an assassin.
...I still wish that Shepard could pursue Joker, though. He's pretty awesome.
On a side note... Jacob's loyalty quest. Good grief. One of the most horrifying sequences in the game, so far, and I'm counting the Collector ship. I mean, somehow it's way more horrifying to see normal people doing terrible things like that to each other than an alien race that no one knows about that probably works for another terrible alien race.

no subject
I sort of want to say "yes, this!" to almost everything in this post, really -- Jacob's creepy Lord-of-the-Flies-esque loyalty mission, and Thane being really interesting and cool, and the Paragon choices just generally feeling better almost all the time, and Joker being rad. mmf. We also would have liked the chance to get involved with him. I mean, surely if we can figure out how to get busy with a species whose proteins are completely incompatible with ours, we should be able to handle sleeping with Joker and not breaking any of his bones, right?
...We also got pretty annoyed at having our run-around-the-galaxy funtime interrupted by that particular mission -- Illusive Man, can't you see we are busy here? there are planets to mine and sidequests to do! Your shady galaxy saving can wait!
\o/, in conclusion.
