I went to a cake shop yesterday, where the big gimmick is DIY cake decorating (and you can get classes there, etc...) I know where I want to go for my next significant birthday party.

I always kind of wanted to learn to decorate cakes when I was young. But now that I could potentially afford to do so, we don't really have the space. Although I could probably figure something out if I did some work to clean the kitchen. I've always liked cake decorating and all the neat things you can do with it.

(Apparently one of my most-read books from my childhood was the 1974 Wilton cake yearbook.)

As somebody who picked up decorating very gradually, I hope you find more cool opportunities to experiment like this! Space is very much a pain to manage the more elaborate something gets, and I feel I would have grasped a lot of things much sooner if I had more than one very tiny counter to start with.

I was joking with my husband about how you had to get a 50-piece starter kit to start out in cake decorating, and he was weirded out by it having that many pieces. Then we went by a craft store (for unrelated reasons) and I showed him a starter kit. Which had 48 pieces. I apparently made an excellent guess there.

They pad out those sets pretty hard, and I confess that I end up using like... three piping heads. I sort of like knowing the other 45 are there, admittedly. I keep telling myself I'm going to get good at buttercream roses or royal icing lacework... someday.

One of my favourite things to do when I want to unwind is watch cake decorating videos. I've never done any cake decorating IRL, but I 100% understand the appeal. That sounds like a fab place to celebrate your birthday!

If I do it, I'll probably ask for an after-hours time, even though it's likely more expensive. My husband has some problems with certain loud noises, like children's parties. Besides, considering that they offer packages for girls' nights out, I can't imagine they won't do an adult birthday party.

(Also they sell alcoholic drinks, so...)

I'm trying to figure out costs now - it's one price for a girls' night out (?) but over twice that for a "party"? Is this a wedding situation where it's cheaper if you don't call it what it is? Does it depend on volume? (I don't have that many people to invite anyway.)
