Nothing turns me off of a community faster than the feeling that if you aren’t already an expert, you’re trash. I’ve seen it in various writing, gaming and artistic communities, among others; you’re not allowed to be new at something, or to make mistakes. If you’re not already great, your performance/work is fair game for ridicule, even public ridicule.

That’s ridiculous to me. How is any community going to grow and thrive if new people are actively being driven away?? And no, I’m not saying people who are new at something should be coddled and told their stuff is perfect when it’s not, but there’s a difference between pointing out issues along with good points, and flaming the hell out of something. It honestly makes me wonder how new people find the fortitude to get started at all.

(This is especially obnoxious combined with the “If you can’t find what you like, make it yourself!” argument, because then you get people who are new to creating the thing trying to make what they like, and then being told that their stuff sucks and this is why more of that thing they like doesn’t exist.)

Also, I hope this doesn't double-post, but automated cross-posting doesn't seem to be working right now.

My Circuits professor likes to assign us problems with variables. As an example, his lecture on Kirchoff's Laws and his homework mostly involve us deriving equations for various things using only variables for voltage and resistance.

I need a good reference on how to solve linear equations using matrices. And on how to take the determinant of matrices above 3x3 with variables (and without LOSING MY DAMN MIND, good grief, that last attempt took me forever and I didn't even finish.)

(I at least hope he posts a detailed answer to this homework question! Because I'd love to know how he used Kirchoff's Laws to derive the equation he asked us to derive. I could easily do it by finding equivalent resistance, but that's not what he wanted. :/)

I signed up for [community profile] getyourwordsout a couple of days ago (I'd been regretting not signing up before, but it turned out to not be too late.) I went for 150k but I'm kind of regretting not going for 75k; I think that full-time classes count as extenuating circumstances, at least. Still, we'll see what happens.

I have no idea what my count is so far. I'll have to take a look at what I've already done to know that. So far my best plan for this months is to look back at old drafts and do complete rewrites of them. Possibly do the same for February, as well, but in March I have something else on my mind. (Multiamory March stuff, naturally.)

I'll come up with better goals this weekend, when I'm not worried about classes. Probably a more coherent post, too.
wallwalker: (happy people scare me)
I had every intention of doing this earlier, but I've been unmotivated. (I would not do well without employment for a long period of time! I barely handled it short-term.)

Anyway. Keeping this short.

- Stop signing up for exchange-style things; I've defaulted on so many lately.
- On the other side of that: Write more gifts/treats for people.
- Get back to doing one self-portrait per month. (I just got a bunch of art supplies as a gift; that will help!)
- Learn a bit more about sewing and beadwork. I have a decent foundation for beadwork, not so much for sewing (although I did handsew a tabard out of a bedsheet the other day.) It'd be nice to have a machine, though.

I was going to make these into more sustainable goals. But school's started again, and I just realized I have ten minutes to get to class. This might be a long semester, since I'm at nearly full-time hours. Let's hope I can handle the material.

Happy 2016, everyone.

(My last attempt at drawing in ink for Inktober. As you can see, I didn’t get too far. And sorry, but I don’t remember what kind of flower it was. Drawn with a micron pen.)

Kitty! I think I might’ve posted this before….
(I can’t find the last of my ink drawings. I really need to start drawing regularly again.)

I did this last year, and it was fun. Let's try again.

(From last year's post:)

The Meme:

Pick a topic, and on some day in December I will post something about that topic. It can be fandom-related or not. Pretty much anything you've ever seen me post about unlocked, or comment on in other venues, is fair game. If a topic is uncomfortable for me (too personal or potentially identifying) or simply something I know very little about (unfamiliar canon, say), I may ask you to make a second choice. If you want to request more than one topic (say, up to three), feel free, but if I get more than 25 or so requests I may pick and choose between them.

This is gonna be pretty informal. I can't guarantee I won't skip a day or two and catch up later (especially during Finals and the holiday rush.) But I'll try.

Also, if you come from another site and don't want to make an account here, you can leave your user name like so:
[user name=NAMEHERE site=SITENAME.EXT]
Replace the square brackets with triangular ones.

Now that Halloween is over, I need help costuming on the cheap. Hopefully we can find some good things on clearance to help out. (Is that how it works?)

I already have a white skirt I want to dye dark red (cotton AFAIK, dunno exactly how well it'll work but it's worth a try). The hard part will be a white tunic of some sort, preferably long-sleeved, with some dragon-scale-patterned fabric on cuffs and collar and a particular golden pattern on the front of it. Not sure whether to go with iron-on (if I can figure out how,) embroidery, or something else. I'll probably have to draw it on first just to have something to fill in. (Bead embroidery might be fun, especially since I've started doing beadwork and bead weaving again. But it might be simpler just to do some kind of medallion, if I go that route, instead of trying to wear it on a tunic. The weight would be harder to offset.)

The other costume will be simpler; I have another white skirt to dye again (brown or rusty brown, probably) and can ask a friend to make a simple peasant blouse. The only complicated part are the beaded medallions I'm making with symbols. (The hard part is counting the damn beads. I've already accidentally used even-count on a thing I wanted to use odd-count gourd stitch on, and I'm far enough that just changing it would be irritating.)

(I did enjoy larping today. I feel more comfortable with it than I did five or six years ago. And hopefully, with my schedule the way it is, I'll be able to show up more often.)

Okay, the crossposting is working. Good deal.

DW: wallwalker
tumblr: theoreticalconstruct
(DW for fan-things: [community profile] personalapocalypse)

I'll probably still post reblogs and images on tumblr, since it's better than DW for that sort of thing. But anything else I'll post here, partially because I still like DW better, mostly because I want to spend more time away from tumblr in general but not give up the people I've met there, because nothing else on the internet now has been as much of a timesink. Glitch was the only thing in recent years that even came close.

(Personal stuff is still locked, of course.)

No cut tags, no images... will you work now??
(I'm trying to get crossposting working. You can ignore this.)

ETA: Using the Atom feed seems to be working. This is good. I will be interested to see how it interacts with cut tags, though.

Some thoughts about the three TV shows I'm trying to follow right now. The only (minor) spoiler is behind a cut. (Also a test post. Let's see if this cross-posts well.)

- I like The Voice, although some of the people I was rooting for have already left the game. (Of the people left, my two favorites were the ones who won their battles and then cheered loudly when the losers got picked up by someone else. Jordan and Evan, I think?)
(The talent competitions are about the only reality TV shows I can stand.)

- Last night on The Blacklist, a character said what everyone's been thinking about Liz and Red. I wonder how the shippers in the fanbase reacted to that? Read more... )
Also, I like Tom a lot more than usual in this season. Maybe it was the Reservoir Dogs-style montage he had a few episodes back.

- I'm still ambivalent about The Player. On the one hand, Wesley Snipes is cool. On the other hand, it's only been a few episodes and already so much about the show's conflict is ridiculously repetitive. I hope it changes it up a little bit later on.
wallwalker: Venetian mask, dark purple with gold gilding. (Default)
Would've done this on the other journal, but this is easier. (Also locked temporarily so that it won't show up on RSS)

Dear writer: This is a work in progress. Sorry about that! I'll be working on this a bit more throughout the week.

I've been following America's Got Talent this season, partially because my partner's a huge fan. There were some pretty neat acts on this season, though. I have a few opinions.

Mostly lists. (Warning: ED. Yes, really.) )

catching up

Catch-up Meme from [personal profile] owlmoose First time I'd seen it, that I remember.

So what have you been up to? / Major life changes? Same old same old?

Let's see:
- Finished the summer courses I was taking, and now just started the fall semester. I'm currently taking the only two courses available to me that advance my area of study. (I am still working on Mathematica code, though. I don't want to forget how to use it.)
- I qualified for Work Study and now have a second job in a library - two hours a day, five days a week, give or take a few. Mostly I prep periodicals for shelving and such.
- We've started going to a local trampoline place. I'm trying to convince my SO that we should go there once a week or so.

Other than that, it's much the same. I mostly study a lot.

What fandom are you in/do you spend most of your time in?

Most of my time? Hmm. Final Fantasy VII, probably. Specifically I've spent quite a bit of time finding and linking Barret/Tifa stuff to [tumblr.com profile] somekindalady, because there are people who actually like it there, and that makes me happy. I haven't gotten into any new fandoms lately, mostly because of time.

I'll probably be back into Star Ocean 2 again once I find my PSX again and finish the game. It's still lots of fun. Also, thanks to at least one PA I've seen, my crack Noel/Dias/Rena OT3 is practically canon.

As far as writing is concerned, I spend a lot of time at [community profile] fic_promptly still. They have a remix challenge coming up, so I've been spending the time to find and collect all of my ficlets on that site into a spreadsheet. It's quite long.

Where do you hang out online?

I finally caved and got a Fanlore wiki account, and started editing a few pages there. My fandoms are underrepresented on that site, and unfortunately I'm not the best person to help with that, because my memory is so fuzzy on so many things, and because I foolishly deleted my community posts in addition to my journal. (I'd tried to archive them. Then I lost the flash drive just before moving them to my new computer. Oops.)
Current projects: Expand the Star Ocean and Skies of Arcadia pages I just made, make a page for Final Fantasy VI, and do more research for FFVIII fandom and/or find other people to help me with it. I can't remember everything, and I was in a corner of fandom at the time that lots of people found really annoying. There were trolls.)

What are you reading?

Textbooks, mostly. Wish I had more time to read. (I did recently read The King In Yellow by Chambers; I can see how it influenced Lovecraft, although I'm not a big Lovecraft fan.)

What are you watching?

Again, I haven't had much time to watch things for myself. I did finally finish Burn Notice, and realized just how dark the last season gets compared to most of the rest of the show. Also, SO's been watching The Blacklist, and sometimes I'll join in; we've finished S1, but I haven't seen them all, partially because of SO's habit of watching things when I'm not there. (James Spader does a frighteningly good job at playing Affably Evil.)

To-Watch list: Season 1 of Sense8 (seen bits of this, again thanks to SO,) Season 1 of Boardwalk Empire, and finishing Season 1 of Daredevil (mostly because I like Foggy and I really like the chemistry between Matt and Foggy and Karen.)

What are you making?

Still doing some work on the Twine game I mentioned a while back, but mostly I've been busy writing papers and coding for class assignments (or just for practice, in a few cases.) C++ really isn't that hard. As I said above, I still write sometimes for [community profile] fic_promptly and I've fallen off the wagon for [community profile] fan_flashworks and want to get back on.

I need to make more time for drawing. I miss drawing.

What are you squeeing about today?

Eh, nothing in fandom. (Sorry, just... too tired to be excited, I suppose.)

If you could rope old fandom friends into a new fandom, it would be.....

Uhhh... ? It'd be cool to have more friends to play on the Wii U with - to help on Hyrule Warriors or to form teams on Splatoon with - but I can't think of much beyond that.

I should really watch/read/dive into _______ and then come talk to you about it!

Any of the things I mentioned above, and also maybe Thor: The Dark World, because I never did see it.

What else is on your mind?

School would be much easier if I wasn't tired out of my mind on allergy meds... at least I'm not itching anymore, which probably says something. But things as a whole are looking up. Still want to post more often.

housecleaning and de-pesting )

In other news, I got a work-study job in addition to my weekend job, checking in and organizing periodicals at one of the local libraries. It's two hours a day on weekdays, so I think I can handle that. I can cut back a few hours at my retail job if I have to. (This one pays a bit less but is easier to get to; I don't have to drive to get there, and lately it's been really hard to coordinate transportation to and from work.)

After taking summer classes, it's really weird to have classes that last less than an hour.
wallwalker: Butterfly with blue and orange wings against a blue sky (butterfly)
Current creative outlet: Trying to learn Twine 2 well enough to program the rough-rough draft of an interactive story/game in ninety days. (It's a thing someone started on tumblr called [tumblr.com profile] writingin90. I'm probably going to skip NaNoWriMo this year, since last year was a bust. Too much schoolwork and too little time.)

I really could use some advice from people who know about Twine/Twine 2, please.

A short summary of what I am hoping to do. )

Doing what I want to do... I don't know how to do that yet, with Twine or any other programming tool, although my classes might help me this Fall (they are all computer programming.) Twine is a good tool to start with, although I might switch over when I know more about what I want to do. But there are some things that I don't know how to do, or if I can do them.

In particular... )

It's ambitious, but it's a concept I'm finding myself really liking, and so I'm hoping I can figure out how to do it one way or the other.

(I haven't decided on graphics. I might try some drawings of the various "worlds," at some point.)
